Harris held talks earlier on Monday with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and other officials on the first of a two-day visit that will include a trip to western Palawan province facing the disputed South China Sea, which Beijing claims virtually in its entirety. She also held separate talks with Vice President Sara Duterte.
"An armed attack on the Philippines armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke the US' mutual defence commitments. And that is an unwavering commitment that we have to the Philippines," Harris said.The Philippines, a former American colony, used to host one of the largest US Navy and Air Force bases outside the American mainland.
