Harris said she's raising her two daughters to take their ambitions seriously — but she isn't "sugar-coating" anything about the racism and sexism they might encounter. "I'm preparing them for the real world," she said. In planning her own career, Harris accounted for the reality that people might underestimate her. A Harvard Law School graduate, Harris clerked for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and was an executive at Uber. Even at Harvard, Harris knew she didn't want to be a partner at a white-shoe law firm, as many of her classmates did. But she hardly regrets any of her career experiences.
"As a woman of color, unfortunately, you need to have every credential on earth so people don't say you're not competent," Harris said.
