The DNC said Vice President Kamala Harris is the only presidential candidate who has qualified to run for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Vice President Kamala Harris is the only presidential candidate who has qualified to run for the Democratic presidential nomination, the Democratic National Committee said Tuesday. No other major Democrat had made any indication they planned to seek the party's nomination to take on former President Trump in November, but the DNC's announcement officially clears the path for the vice president to run unopposed for the nomination, according to The Associated Press.
According to the DNC, 3,923 delegates had petitioned to nominate Harris. Even with the early vote to choose a nominee, delegates will still attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in late August. The party will hold a ceremonial state-by-state roll call vote on the convention floor before Harris and her running mate, who has not yet been named, deliver speeches. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
