The flag burning came in protest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress.
Vice President Kamala Harris issued a statement Thursday condemning those who burned flags in Washington D.C. The demonstrations came in protest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress .
Protesters took to the streets during the address waiving Palestinian flags, chanting and pounding drums. Harris, who is eyeing a Democratic nomination for president in August, said the American flag should never be treated in such a way. “Yesterday, at Union Station in Washington D.C., we saw despicable acts by unpatriotic protesters and dangerous hate-fueled rhetoric,” she. “I condemn the burning of the American flag. That flag is a symbol of our highest ideals as a nation and represents the promise of America. It should never be desecrated in that way.” Continuing, the vice president shared her support for peaceful protesting, but said “antisemitism, hate and violence” have no place in the U.S. Former President Donald Trump also spoke out Thursday on such demonstrations, saying those who desecrate the American flag should face a year in jail for the offense.. “Those are stupid people. Those are stupid people that say that. We have to work in Congress to get a one-year jail sentence. When they’re allowed to stomp on the flag and put lighter fluid on the flag and set it afire —when you’re allowed to do that, you get a one-year jail sentence and you’ll never see it again.” Jackson Walker on X at @_jlwalker_ for the latest trending national news.
