The former Whites midfielder has struggled at Manchester City and West Ham United since leaving Elland Road
A summer transfer back to Leeds United is the 'only way' Kalvin Phillips will refind the kind of form that won him a big-money transfer to Manchester City and make him 'loved' again, according to former Republic of Ireland midfielder Andy Townsend.
That move was supposed to help ensure he kept his England place ahead of this summer's European Championships, but he been unable to find his form under David Moyes in East London and was left out of Gareth Southgate's squad in the recent international break. Just last weekend, he gave away a disputed penalty as the Hammers threw away a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 at Newcastle, prompting talk of a return to Leeds in the summer.
READ MORE: Leeds United 'eye' transfer move for Sunderland star but face Aston Villa and Napoli competition “I can only see a return to Leeds being the only way for him to possibly find some sort of peace inside, to be comfortable in his surroundings and to be loved again," Townsend told talkSPORT. “That’s probably what he needs more than anything because it wasn’t long ago when he was wearing White at Leeds United, everybody was seeing this boy and thinking ‘Wow. What a player, he’s terrific, he gets across the ground, he can pass, he’s going to be an asset to any team.
