We chat with TheSantaClauses star kalpenn about his role as Simon Choksi, living up to the beloved franchise, and some of the Christmas themes the disneyplus series goes into:
The Santa Clause franchise is one of the most timeless holiday season classics, and it's set to continue with Disney+'s upcoming miniseries The Santa Clauses. With its first two episodes arriving on Disney + on November 16th, The Santa Clauses is a very different tale for Scott Calvin a.
k.a. Santa Claus, with the miniseries introducing numerous new characters like Kal Penn's Simon Choksi. In The Santa Clauses, Scott Calvin decides to retire as Santa Claus in order to raise his family outside the North Pole. Before he can, Scott will need to appoint a Santa Claus successor to carry on his mantle. One such candidate Scott sees Santa potential in is tech wiz Simon Choksi , a genius inventor and single father to his Grace daughter .We speak to Kal Penn about his role as Simon Choksi on The Santa Clauses, the experience of entering the popular holiday season franchise, and some of the Christmas themes the series goes into. Kal Penn on The Santa Clauses Screen Rant: In The Santa Clauses, you play Simon, who is an inventor and entrepreneur that gets pulled a bit into the North Pole. Entering something with as much history as The Santa Clause, how did you approach taking on this mad scientist sort? Kal Penn: I'd worked with our EP Jason [Winer] about 20 years ago on something, and we've known each other off and on through the years. He reached out and was like, "Hey, there's kind of a super secret holiday project that I'd love for you to take a look at." Then he sent me the script and the role, and I realized it was The Santa Clauses. I was like, "Dude, I don't even need to read beyond the first episode! Yes, I would love to do this, it would be incredible!" I grew up watching those movies, and I'm a huge Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell fan. So, of course, the answer's yes. But then, getting to know the character was even better. Simon Choksi is like the Simone Biles of the tech world. He's created this delivery tech platform, maybe not that different from ones that exist in the real world, but he's also a single dad who's trying to figure out how to properly raise his daughter and run his company at the same time. It's one of the reasons that Santa, thinks that of the many people to potentially replace him, he's going to include Simon in that mix. And so, the arc is really about everything you might hope for in a great Christmas series. The question of greed, of putting yourself first versus your relationship with the kid. And a kid, in this case Simon's daughter played by Rupali Redd, really brings out the best of reminding everybody about why Christmas is important and the Christmas spirit. All of that drew me to the project. Screen Rant: Simon has a similar starting point as Scott did. When you're entering something with so much history, what did you find to be the biggest challenge? Kal Penn: From my perspective, I'm not a writer. I'm not a producer on the project, so challenge-wise, that wasn't really something that I felt. I was more sort of really enamored by all of the work that went into this. Tim, for instance, it's a franchise that he's been in all the movies that led up to this series, so watching him work and making sure that everything for him was grounded not just in the character of Santa Claus, but in the world. One of the things that we know about this world that have existed for so long that are laid out in the film and now are being extended in the series, one of the things in both the aspects of the reality of how the holiday of Christmas was started, the reality of what it celebrates, which is the birth of Christ, the reality of living in maybe a secular America where plenty of people like myself celebrate Christmas but don't celebrate it in a religious context. All of that was all the research and the scriptwriting and making sure that everything really fit together nicely, so by the time I entered as just an actor who gets to play this part, all of that stuff was already decided, and it was just wonderful to have those conversations with the people who created it and wrote that, because you really get to step in as an actor into a totally seamless world. About The Santa Clauses Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever,” the log line reads. “He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.NEXT: The Santa Clause Theory Perfectly Explains The Weirdest Plot Hole
