Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder David Mathebula has praised Amakhosi’s shrewd business in the transfer window.
Chiefs have released more than 10 players who were part of the squad in the 2021/22 season. Most of these players were either over the age of 30 or out of contract at the end of June. The long list included forwards Samir Nurkovic, Leonardo Castro, Lebogang Manyama and goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi among others.
They were swiftly replaced with another buying spree that brought in Stellenbosch duo Ashely du Preez and Zitha Kwinika, Yusuf Maart from Sekhukhune and Swallows trio Dillon Solomons, Kamohelo Mahlatsi and George Matlou. "I think it was a very good window for the Chiefs. They went out and got the players that would fit the style of play. They sorted out their business early, even before the transfer window opened," Mathebula tellsChiefs have made great signings in the past and still couldn’t win a trophy. Mathebula warns that signing great individual players alone won’t be enough and the team’s technical staff will have a key role in fitting them into the team.
Chiefs may not be done with their recruitment overhaul as the Glamour Boys are reportedly in the hunt for Golden Arrows’ Mmodi Pule, as are Orlando Pirates.
