We chat with TicketToParadise stars KaitlynDever & Maxime Bouttier about working with rom-com greats like Julia Roberts and George Clooney and making the world fall in love with Bali:
Ticket to Paradise provides exactly what the title implies: a getaway vacation to Bali with bonafide movie stars that relishes in rom-com tropes that sometimes seem to be part of our past. Its protagonists, divorced couple David and Georgia, have certainly taken to living in the past.
George Clooney and Julia Roberts play bitter exes who can't even play nice during their daughter Lily's law school graduation ceremony in Ol Parker's newest film. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Lily , on the other hand, has chosen to live very much in the present. When she ditches her up-and-coming career as a lawyer to marry seaweed farmer Gede in Bali, her feuding parents must pack up and fly across the world to convince her she's making a mistake. The gorgeous island of Bali and its crystal clear coastline, however, makes a very strong argument in Lily's favor—and it may even remind her mom and dad what they've been running from all these years. Screen Rant spoke to Dever and Bouttier about how well superstars Julia Roberts and George Clooney guided them in the rom-com genre, what went into respecting Balinese traditions while filming, and why audiences should see films like Ticket to Paradise. Kaitlyn Dever & Maxime Bouttier Talk Ticket To Paradise Screen Rant: Kaitlyn, I must know, how do you prepare to be Julia Roberts' daughter? What is that like? Kaitlyn Dever: There was really no formula for starting that kind of role. I think that I was so relieved when I met her, because obviously I was nervous. She is someone I've looked up to for so long. Our chemistry [was great], and the way she was everybody on set. She has a really motherly and comforting quality about her, and that was instant. [It was] really just allowing that to be what it is in the film. It was very natural, and the dialogue is very natural. I think it was all about really being organic in those moments and letting those moments feel free, which was really nice, because it's the best kind of movie for that kind of thing. Maxime, you spent a lot of time with George Clooney, and it must take every ounce of acting in your soul to make it look like you might dislike him. Maxime Bouttier: The whole time I tried just to stand [straight]. I remember the first day, my legs were just like [jelly]. I was like, "There's an earthquake going on here." I'm not gonna say you get used to it, but you do get used to it. Kaitlyn Dever: You never really get used to it. Even talking about it now, knowing they're down the hall from us... Maxime Bouttier: There are still those moments where you're like, "Wow, yeah, I did do that." But he was very nurturing and really helpful. Just a cool guy; a really fun guy to be with. That's enough, and it helps you to just do what you do. I absolutely bought the chemistry between the two of you. Are you here to save the rom-com genre? Because I just saw you in Rosaline, Kaitlyn, and I need to see you in every possible rom-com from now on, Maxime. Kaitlyn Dever: Thank you! Yeah, I had never done a real romantic comedy like this before. Obviously, I've done Booksmart and other comedic roles before, but this was a whole new part of my brain that I was working. I'd love to do another one. I'd love to do it. It's something that we all really need right now, I think, to have a really good time watching a film in the theater. Maxime, it's so interesting that Indonesia is such an essential part of the film, even though you're filming in Australia. I would hope that the production was respectful of the culture and the traditions, but were there any conversations on set about how to portray the family and the culture? Maxime Bouttier: In pre-production, they were already having a consultation about that. My dad, actually, was consulting a lot about Bali culture. We were talking a lot about that. I think everything was portrayed correctly, and it's subtle as well. Kaitlyn Dever: Your dad in the movie came on to be a consultant, and then Ol cast him as his dad. And he's so good in the movie. He's so good! Maxime Bouttier: He was brilliant. Yeah, so he helped a lot. I think it was really well portrayed, and the Balinese people loved it. We were just very proud of it. It's just a really feel-good movie, to really show Bali to the world. Finally, if you were recommending either a destination wedding or a getaway vacation, where would you recommend? Kaitlyn Dever: Surprisingly, I'm actually more of a [winter person], and I think you are too. What was nice about this is that it was a completely different kind of vacation for me, but I love snow and cold. Maybe a mountain or forest. Maxime Bouttier: I was going to say Japan because I've been dying to go to Japan. I think [I'd like] having a nice, bath house vibe by a snowy mountain.
