The company plans to cut 500 jobs by the end of the year, the Wall Street Journal reported.

: After rapidly expanding and cornering the e-cigarette market, San Francisco-based Juul Labs plans to downsize as part of a “necessary reset” as the company faces increased scrutiny from regulators amid a spate of vaping-related illnesses. reported. A Juul spokesperson confirmed the company is laying off employees but declined to give a specific number.

Despite warnings from public health experts, Juul had been on a hiring spree over the last year. The company hired an average of 300 employees per month in 2019, growing to nearly 4,000 employees total. But Juul instituted a hiring freeze in September as regulatory pressure reached a breaking point, with some states passing measures outlawing the sale of e-cigarettes and the Trump administration considering a federal ban on flavored ones.

The layoffs will hit several departments, but a spokesperson said Juul’s product team and the team working on getting FDA approval will continue to grow.: “As the vapor category undergoes a necessary reset, this reorganization will help Juul Labs focus on reducing underage use, investing in scientific research, and creating new technologies while earning a license to operate in the U.S. and around the world,” CEO K.C. Crosthwaite said.
