More consequential games loom for the Astros’ ageless ace, a man who continues to defy convention while paving his path to Cooperstown.
Verlander fired five fabulous innings and fulfilled both goals. The season’s penultimate game ended as another exclamation point for one of this generation’s greatest pitchers, one who seems to author history each time he toes the rubber. Verlander entered the start on a pitch count, both to preserve his arm and afford Houston’s relievers some work before an upcoming five-day layoff. As a result, the Astros lifted Verlander from a no-hitter for the third time this season inside Minute Maid Park.
Since the American League began in 1901, only 57 of its qualified starters have finished a full season with anything lower than a 1.80 ERA. Verlander fired five scoreless innings Tuesday to become the 58th. “I know how hard I worked. I know how good I felt. I know how good the rehab went, and I know how good my body felt coming into the season. To me, this was maybe not what was supposed to happen but what I expected to happen. I thought I would be me when I’m healthy, which is usually pretty good.”
