Justin Verlander puts the Astros on his back in win against Mariners
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JULY 23: Martin Maldonado #15 of the Houston Astros high-fives Bryan Abreu #52 after the game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on July 23, 2022 in Seattle, Washington. The Houston Astros won 3-1. SEATTLE — Age saps strength and layoffs lessen effectiveness. Justin Verlander exists as an exception to both accepted truths. Patches of gray in his beard foster a false sense the Astros’ ace is fading while Father Time takes hold.
“I feel like I haven’t been able to let it go like that in a long time. Really, it feels great. I feel like a younger version of myself. I used to be able to do that. The last few years, I felt like whenever I tried to step on the gas or let it go, the didn’t really correspond with the effort.” Verlander morphed into a man possessed to finish it, flipping from dominant to downright disgusting. To strand the bases loaded and save a lead, Verlander fired 11 fastballs at 98 mph or harder. Four of them eclipsed 99.
Verlander views this entire season as a series of milestones, some more apparent than others. Each start is a new test for a reconstructed right elbow and a man pushing boundaries of physics and science. He threw 59 four-seam fastballs on Saturday and averaged 96.3 mph. Verlander sat 94.9 mph all season.
Seattle saw 13 or fewer pitches in each of the first six innings. Verlander retired 15 consecutive Mariners prior to Carlos Santana’s arrival in the seventh. The veteran slugger struck a hanging curveball for a solo home run to stop the rhythm. Verlander bent both knees at the sound of contact. He watched the baseball travel into the right-field seats before dropping his head.

How we’re examining Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s proposal to spend taxes transporting women for abortions: Letter from the EditorIt’s a story that checks several boxes for big news. It’s about abortion, one of the controversial topics of the year. It’s a radical proposal from Cleveland’s still-new mayor, someone who campaigned on breaking with the status quo to solve problems.
