Pierre Trudeau tops list when Canadians asked to pick the best leader since 1968. His son was named worst by three in 10 respondents
There were regional differences among the responses, the pollster found. More than a third of Albertans picked Harper as the best Prime Minister, perhaps because of his political roots there. He was first elected in the 1993 federal election as a Reform Party candidate in the riding of Calgary West.
This might be due to memories of his government’s National Energy Program of the 1980s, which was deeply unpopular in the oil-rich province. Of the 10 names, the late NDP leader Jack Layton ranked best, with 22 per cent of respondents saying he’d have been a very good leader, and another 26 per cent choosing “good.”
