Justin Fields wasn’t looking past his next meal when asked about what his future holds.

“I don’t know what I’m going to eat for dinner tonight, so I can’t even worry about what’s going to happen after the season,” Fields said after Friday’s practice. “We’ll just see and take it day-by-day.

”He has been on the injury report with a “nick” or “bruise” to his knee since Dec. 3 – shortly after he lost the starting job to Tyrod Taylor, whose own injury ceded the job to undrafted rookie Brady Cook. “I’m alright – it’s not 100 percent but it’s getting there,” Fields said. “I’m trying to get treatment on it, and then I stopped playing and the problem didn’t resolve. When you are not playing as much, not getting in the games, you expect stuff to clean up. But it just didn’t happen, so I just got imaging on it, they found something and now we’re at this point.”While Fields “of course” would like to play again before season’s end, is there any point in rushing back as a backup and jeopardizing his future? Or should he take the long-term outlook, too?“Almost, you think of it,” Fields said. “I don’t know to what degree Garrett’s knee was, so I can’t compare it to mine, but I’m going to try to get it feeling right.” Fields is owed $10 million guaranteed by the Jets next season, and the salary-cap savings for cutting him would be only $1 million against a $22 million dead-cap charge. While moving on from Fields is not financially enticing, it might make sense for the Jets to have a clean break if they plan to import a rookie or free agent to start.Fields had a 2-7 record with seven touchdowns and only one interception in nine starts. He is averaging 182.5 yards per game between his arm and his legs. The Jets’ quarterback depth chart has been turned on its head from Fields, Taylor and Cook, respectively, in Week 1 to Cook, Taylor and the injured Fields in Week 16 – with a couple other alignments in between.“It was definitely not what we planned it out to be,” Fields said of the season. “But it’s life. Nothing works out how you want it to, but everything happens for a reason. I’ll just keep getting better as a quarterback – evolving my game and changing my game.”Conan O'Brien stopped guests from calling 911 on Nick Reiner during explosive fight with dad Rob at holiday party: report
