Investigators want communications records between local officials and advisers of Mr. Trump, including Rudy Giuliani, Joe DiGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, Lin Wood and John Eastman. All were in the president’s inner circle in the aftermath of the 2020 election andRepresentatives for Mr. Trump didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
The subpoenas, reported earlier by the Washington Post, are the latest indication that the department’s probe into efforts by Mr. Trump and his allies to overturn his election loss is escalating. Attorney General Merrick Garland last month appointed Mr. Smith, a former federal and international war-crimes prosecutor, to oversee that investigation as well as a separate probe into theMr.
