The Kuala Lumpur City Hall has just announced that it is cancelling its Merdeka Eve 2024 celebration on the night of 30 August at Dataran Merdeka following high-profile incidents that happened in and around Kuala Lumpur.

While DBKL didn’t mention the specifics, it is believed that the city council was referring to the tragic sinkhole incident at Jalan Masjid India on 23 August. Following the incident, Jalan Masjid India is now closed to all vehicles until further notice and on 28 August, another sunken road was spotted just 50 metres away from the sinkhole.
