BREAKING: Jury trials will resume in England and Wales from next week
Jury trials are set to resume in England and Wales from next week after being suspended for almost two months, it has been announced.
The Lord Chief, Justice Lord Burnett, announced on Monday that jury trials will continue on May 18 under special arrangements in line with social distancing guidelines. All crown court trials have been suspended since March 23 in a bid to slow the spread of the pandemic, amid fears that those attending would not be able to properly social distance.
However, fears have been raised that the courts are being re-opened too soon because judges are keen to start tackling a long backlog of cases. It is understood that two jury trials will resume sooner than the proposed date at the Old Bailey this week, according to the Law Society Gazette.
