Nearly five years after Lowndes County Sheriff John “Big John” Williams was shot to death at a Hayneville gas station, the man accused of pulling the trigger is set to go on trial.

On Monday, court proceedings got underway in Macon County, where the trial was moved to insure fairness. Jury selection in the trial against William Chase Johnson is underway with dozens of potential jurors being questioned about their ability to fairly serve in this high profile case.Johnson is charged with capital murder for Sheriff Williams’ death. Investigators say Johnson shot the county’s chief law enforcement officer as he was trying to break up a crowd at a gas station late on the evening of Nov. 23, 2019.
Police say Johnson left the scene but then came back and turned himself in and admitted to shooting the sheriff.
