With a jury deadlocked for days over how to sentence Alexander Castro for killing a UTSA graduate in 2022, the judge had warned she would need to declare a mistrial in the punishment phase of his criminally negligent homicide conviction. The jury finally ended its marathon of deliberation and handed Castro 10 years probation late Friday. State District Judge Stephanie Boyd piled on restrictions and conditions to it.

They reached a verdict the next morning, then heard testimony in the trial’s punishment phase from the mothers of both Seybert and Castro.
