Lindsay Smith was sentenced to 18 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to intoxication manslaughter in the 2022 drunk driving crash that killed an off-duty Poteet police officer in north Austin .
The jury handed down the sentence around 7:55 p.m. after several hours of deliberation, according to the official court reporter for the 390th District Court in Travis County. Earlier in the week, Smith pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter causing the death of a peace officer.The fatal crash occurred on June 29, 2022, when Smith drove through a barricade on the northbound service road of Mopac near The Domain and struck Officer Jeffery Richardson, 35, who was working off-duty in the area. Richardson was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
An arrest affidavit states that when officers made contact with Smith at the scene, she exhibited signs of intoxication including bloodshot, glassy eyes, mumbled and confused speech, and difficulty balancing. Smith admitted to consuming two alcoholic drinks at a downtown Austin bar prior to driving, according to the affidavit.
