Trial of ex-deputies for Javier Ambler's 2019 death starts; 25 witnesses to testify.
Fred CantuThe manslaughter trial of ex-Williamson County deputies James Johnson and Zachary Camden begins, focusing on the 2019 death of Javier Ambler after a chase and tasing. Prosecutors will present 25 witnesses, including first responders and 'Live PD' crew, arguing the deputies' actions led to Ambler's death, while the defense cites health issues and drug use.
In March of 2019 Deputies James “J.J.” Johnson and Zachary Camden chased Javier Ambler for more than 20 minutes after he failed to pull over for a traffic stop in Williamson County. The pursuit ended when Ambler crashed his SUV in northeast Austin. But the state plans to argue otherwise. Prosecutor Holly Taylor said in her opening arguments, “Those were not the cause of Javier’s death. The cause of Javier’s death was the actions that these defendants chose to make that night in repeatedly tasing him and forcibly restraining him.”
