Amateur astronomers and the public alike will be treated to a special celestial show Monday night, as the solar system’s largest planet will be close enough that its features can potentially be seen with just a pair of binoculars.
A “good pair of binoculars” should be enough to see bands on the surface of Jupiter, as well as three or four of the planet’s more than six-dozen moons, according to Kobelski.
It's not quite clear if you'll be able to see it in the Chicago area, as a band of clouds from the northwest are expected to make for a partly cloud to even mostly cloudy evening. “This is stuff of science-fiction books and really corny episodes of “StarTrek” from when I was a kid, and now it's real,” NASA program scientist Tom Statler said Thursday. Cameras and telescopes will watch the crash, but it will take days or even weeks to find out if it actually changed the orbit.
