Buffalo has been celebrating Juneteenth since 1976 when a community-based organization – B.U.I.L.D. – blocked off part of Jefferson Avenue for a weekend celebration. Since then, as the event grew more popular, thehave moved to the Martin Luther King Jr. Park located on the city's East Side. This year marks the 46th consecutive festival and though the official Juneteenth celebration, "The Continual Evolution of Juneteenth," will be online, there will be outdoor festivals filled with children's activities, entertainment and vendors.
In 2020, the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, signed legislation declaring Juneteenth an official public holiday. There will be the annual parade, whose beginnings date back to the 1950s, as well as interactive and educational activities for kids, a street festival and Black Pride Events dotted throughout the city.
