A shortage of child care centers and workers has left Juneau parents with limited affordable and reliable care options for their children. A state child care task force has proposed numerous recommendations aimed at expanding child care options across the state. City and Borough of Juneau Deputy City Manager Robert Barr, a member of the task force, spoke with KTOO about the task force's findings and the city's potential role in implementing them.
\Barr described Juneau's child care situation as better than many parts of Alaska because the city has been subsidizing and investing in the sector for several years. He highlighted the economic impact of the lack of reliable child care, stating that parents who cannot find suitable care are less likely to work.
