Juneau has brokered an agreement with major cruise lines to limit the total amount of passenger coming into the city each day.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The City of Juneau , has placed a daily limit on cruise ship passengers coming into the city to relieve tensions. But how will it impact the economy?
Tourism season brings significant revenue to the state of Alaska, particularly hitting localities such as Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau. Due to that revenue, many areas in the sate as well as businesses have been structured to cater specifically to that group.Since the Covid-19 pandemic, cruise lines in Alaska have seen an increase in numbers, with a record of 1.6 million tourists reaching Juneau, the state’s capitol, last year.
Despite the economic gains, the increases have caused tension, leading the city to strike an agreement with major cruise lines. That agreement creates a 16,000-person daily limited for cruise passengers coming to shore Sunday through Friday. The limit for Saturday is even lower at just 12,000 persons.
Still, some say the limits are not enough for the capitol. The city only has a population of about 32,000 people but it severely lacks the ability to expand due to the geography of the area.Copyright 2024 KTVF. All rights reserved.
