Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s position on Indigenous constitutional recognition suffered a significant blow, with his own party spokesman quitting to support the Voice.
has quit the Coalition frontbench, splitting with Peter Dutton on the Voice to parliament referendum.
“Peter Dutton has underestimated the number of Liberal and National voters who will show generosity and goodwill, and vote yes to constitutional recognition in this referendum,” Mr Albanese said.Mr Leeser criticised Mr Albanese’s management of the Voice process since last year’s election, and said he would push for a controversial clause of the draft constitutional amendment to be removed.
After first working on a proposal for constitutional recognition in 2014, Mr Leeser helped found the Uphold and Recognise organisation, which has advocated for constitutional recognition. He chaired a 2018 parliamentary committee on recognition with Labor’s Pat Dodson and reportedly pushed for a free vote for shadow cabinet members last week.Moderates including Simon Birmingham, Marise Payne and Paul Fletcher reportedly supported Mr Leeser’s position by were overruled.
“I believe that voice can help move the dial on Indigenous education, health, housing, safety and economic development.”He said he had held respectful discussions with parliamentary colleagues over the past year.
