Wikileaks said Assange had been granted bail and left the UK on Monday, ahead of a deal with the US which could secure his freedom
has been granted bail and released from Belmarsh Prison following plea deal negotiations with the US, Wikileaks has said.
According to court papers filed late on Monday, US prosecutors said Assange, 52, has agreed to plead guilty to a single criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defence documents. He is likely to be credited for the five years he has already served in a British jail and face no new jail time. He is expected to return to his native Australia after the plea and sentencing.
Assange was indicted during former President Donald Trump’s administration over the mass release of secret documents, which were leaked by Chelsea Manning, a former US military intelligence analyst who was also prosecuted under the Espionage Act.
