The former San Antonio Mayor said the president's administration has been dragging its feet on the wind down of Title 42 when it should have been more proactive.
Secretary Julián Castro speaks at the 2022 Texas Democratic Convention general session event, Friday, July 15, 2022, in Dallas.Key Hispanic political leaders in Texas and beyond are blasting President Joe Biden for the administration’s new policy that will prevent many asylum-seekers at the border from claiming protection on U.S. soil.
The Biden administration says the program will have tougher consequences for people who don’t follow the rules and try to enter the country illegally. Most notably, they could be barred from making an asylum claim for five years. It’s all brought condemnation from Hispanic leaders in Congress and from Julián Castro, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former mayor of San Antonio, who took to social media to point out Biden’s flip-flop on the issue. During the 2020 presidential campaign, the Democrat blasted Trump for making migrants remain in squalor on the other side of the border and preventing them from making legitimate asylum claims.
But Castro said Biden is now doing the same thing, preventing people from making their claim on U.S. soil.“This is the first president in the history of the United States of America that says anybody seeking asylum has to do it in another country.”
