Despite some missteps, Julián Castro set himself apart in last night's Demdebate. satansjacuzzi with the full breakdown:

, the former Housing and Urban Development Secretary and former mayor of San Antonio. From his very first chance to answer a question about the gender pay gap, the candidate from Texas seemed to impress.

“I grew up with a mother who raised my brother, Joaquin, and me as a single parent. And I know what it's like to struggle,” Castro said, making his first big splash of the evening during a debate segment on the economy. “I would do several things, starting with something we should have done a long time ago, which is to pass the Equal Rights Amendment finally in this country. And also pursue legislation so that women are paid equal pay for equal work in this country.

But it was during a conversation on reproductive choice that Castro made his biggest error of the night as he was arguing that the issue should be framed as one of reproductive freedom like other candidates had done, but also of reproductive justice.“What that means is that just because a woman — or let's also not forget someone in the trans community, a trans female — is poor, doesn't mean they shouldn't have the right to exercise that right to choose.

It was a bold statement, and his attempt at inclusive language by shouting out the transgender community was symbolically important, but he muffed the phrasing. Castro’s clarifying reference to “trans females” as an attempt to acknowledge that trans men and non-binary people can often get pregnant by virtue of their anatomy, but his use of “females” erases the reality of those people’s gender. The attempt still matters, though, and it wasn’t long after this that the debate turned to immigration and Castro really stood out.
