The chapter begins with Takaba when he was still in university. He’s screaming at his friend for being late. The two of them practice for their show. However, Takaba’s friend does not remember his lines.
His friend mentions that Takaba doesn’t go to the drinking parties and he doesn’t laugh at other people’s jokes. Takaba responds by saying he’ll only laugh if the jokes are actually funny. His friend then says it’s because of Takaba that their upperclassmen don’t notice them. Takaba insists he’s just saying they should be serious about comedy. His friend says it’s not enjoyable doing comedy with him. He also asks how is the audience supposed to laugh when they themselves cannot.
