Superior Court Judge Brent Bennet ruled in favor of the plaintiffs on some claims in July. A hearing to approve settlements on the remaining claims is scheduled for Nov. 14.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A November 2023 lawsuit that alleged teachers physically abused kids at a Fairbanks childcare center is nearing a $1.4 million resolution.

Fairbanks Superior Court Judge Brent Bennett granted a stipulated judgment in July that ruled in favor of the plaintiffs on claims involving the parents, according to Schrum, splitting a $200,000 payout between them and including a finding of fault against the defendants. The original complaint said that teachers would forcefully grab or yank children, sometimes leaving visible scratches or injuring them to the point of warranting a visit to the emergency room. Schrum’s child first told her that now-resigned teacher Donna Welty was hurting him in late 2019, according to the lawsuit.

Beyond sustaining injuries at the hands of teachers, children were also reportedly put through cold weather punishment in which teachers would leave them outside without coats, hats and other attire in temperatures down to 20 degrees below zero. Three years since, Schrum said the decision to collectively settle for $1.4 million was an adequate conclusion to the case.
