Amid Friday afternoon rulings that the Trump administration needs to fund SNAP during the shutdown, Alabama groups are still preparing to feed people who will not be getting their regular SNAP benefits Nov. 1.

) - Friday afternoon, two federal judges ruled that the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has to give money owed to SNAP recipients ‘as soon as possible.’ The rulings are expected to face appeals from the Trump administration, and a final plan of how the funds would be distributed to SNAP recipients has not been announced since the ruling.

In the meantime, organizations around the state are continuing to prepare for the possibility of 750,000 Alabamians, who rely on SNAP, to not receive their benefits on Nov. 1. “It’s very tense and it’s very tense across the board, everybody that you talk to is very nervous and tense,” said Chris Turman, CEO of Meals on Wheels in Montgomery. Turman said they are preparing to see an influx of requests for food delivery if SNAP recipients see disruptions in their service. “I think people have been out there trying to spend down what they have and get food into their pantries and their houses,” he said. “If resolve this, our waiting list will go up exponentially.” Pam Goodwin, director of senior services at Meals on Wheels, said 85 percent of the seniors they help are nutritionally at risk, and that is with the assistance they receive from SNAP. “They’re already struggling to make sure they get the nutrition that they need and then what that causes in the long run is increased health and increased hospitalizations for our seniors,” she said. Goodwin said it is harder for seniors to get to the grocery store already, and without SNAP running as normal, it will be harder for seniors to get the food themselves, or to have a family member pick up food on their behalf. Turman said Meals on Wheels is inviting anyone to volunteer their time, such as preparing, packing or delivering food.WSFA News Director Desmond Wingard dies after cancer battleRepublican leaders reject Trump’s demands to scrap the Senate filibuster to end the shutdown
