Bowden, an ear, nose and throat specialist with a private practice in River Oaks, argues in her complaint that the Texas Medical Center hospital damaged her reputation when it publicly denounced her views on COVID-19 and related treatments.
A hearing is slated for 2 p.m. in the 151st District Court in Harris County, in response to the hospital’s motion to dismiss the suit and to strike evidence.River Oaks doctor resigns from Houston Methodist after suspension for spreading COVID misinformation
The doctor has touted the benefits of ivermectin for treatment of COVID-19, despite well-designed studies showing no benefit, and says COVID vaccines are dangerous, even though evidence shows they are safe and effective. Upon her suspension in November 2021, the hospital said she used her social media accounts to express her personal and political opinions, “which are harmful to the community,” and that she spread “dangerous misinformation” not based in science. The hospital also cited “unprofessional behavior,” including vulgar language on social media, as the key reason for the suspension.
Bowden ultimately resigned as a member of the hospital’s provisional staff. In court filings, the doctor said she lost patients and was exposed to “public hatred, contempt, ridicule and financial injury.” In responses, the hospital has said medical evidence backs up its statements, and that Bowden republished the alleged defamatory statements herself in multiple conservative media appearances. The hospital also alleges Bowden profited from the ordeal.
Bowden is asking for $25 million in damages. She has hired Steven Biss, an attorney based in Charlottesville, Va., and Cypress lawyer Madhu Sekharan.
