A federal judge in Texas struck down a major part of the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that most insurers cover certain preventive health services via WSJ

WASHINGTON—A federal judge in Texas struck down a major part of the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that most insurers, in a ruling that applies nationwide and will likely be appealed.

The decision could result in more than 150 million people losing access to many of the no-cost health screenings. Insurers are unlikely to immediately drop no-cost preventive care because most contracts are written through the end of the year and a stay on the decision is likely, some legal analysts say.and means the ACA’s contraceptive coverage requirements, as well as preventive care that has become a staple of the health landscape, again hang in the legal balance.

Three entities determine what no-cost services must be covered. The ruling Thursday applies to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which is an independent volunteer panel of health experts whose recommendations have led to no-cost coverage ofand screenings for colon cancer, HIV, cervical cancer, and gestational diabetes.
