Mary Beth Clark passed away Feb. 10 from a brain hemorrhage. She was an Associate Professor of Penn State School of Nursing for more than 30 years.
An honored healthcare provider, educator and researcher is being remembered for the thousands of lives she touched through her work with nursing students at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
They included a quality improvement initiative focused on building better communication between nurses and doctors. “She was a forerunner in many discreet disciplines with nursing. She had vision,” her husband said Saturday.Clark said he met his wife of 47 years on a blind date when he was a young state police trooper. The couple dated for five years before marrying in 1974 and moving to Hershey from Wilkes-Barre, where both had relatives.
Extended family gathered while she was hospitalized, leaning on their Roman Catholic faith. “It took us a couple of days to come to grips that she would never recover,” Clark said. “She would never be the vibrant woman that she was. We knew without a doubt she would not want to live in a vegetated state for the remainder of her life.”
Although their careers followed different paths, they worked together on things such as grant writing, teaching classes and mentoring students, she said.
