A DuPage County judge has ruled that Oakbrook Terrace must remove the red-light cameras at the intersection of 22nd Street and Route 83.

There were multiple continuances granted in the case while Oakbrook Terrace and its red-light camera vendor, SafeSpeed, continued to generate revenue from violations. “We are deeply disappointed in the ruling, which will endanger our community and those that visit the region,” Esposito said. “Without red-light cameras, we will have to resort to other tools in combating the over 230,000 drivers who fail to stop at that intersection.”“The police departments of local municipalities have long been charged with the responsibility of enforcing the state’s traffic laws within their borders,” he said.
However, Belford’s ruling clearly indicated he did not agree. The judge wrote the IDOT permit was contingent on the city preparing evaluation reports, and that IDOT reserved the right to revoke the permit if it “is in the best interest of the motoring public of Illinois.”
