A federal judge in Alexandria ordered in an injunction Friday that the registrations of 1,600+ Virginia votes be restored after being removed just weeks before the Nov. 5 general election.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration canceled the voters' registrations because they believed they were non-U.S. citizens, despite claims from some that many of those removed were eligible voters. The legal decision also followed after Youngkin signed anIn a statement following the court's decision, Youngkin said his administration would file a petition in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals "immediately.
Those challenging Youngkin's removal argued that many removed from the voter rolls were still eligible to cast a ballot and that the. An official with the League of Women Voters of Virginia, a group that also sued Youngkin's administration, told 7News they were working to contact over 6,000 people to help them re-enroll.
According to the Associated Press, Virginia officials argued unsuccessfully that the canceled registrations followed careful procedures that targeted people who explicitly identified themselves as noncitizens to the Department of Motor Vehicles.The governor said the removal followed a 2006 memo from the DOJ over a law signed by then-Gov. Tim Kaine that ordered noncitizens to be removed from voter rolls.
