Court filings show that the mayor’s decision was made after an early Thursday morning email was sent by Prattville Pride organizers to the city’s police chief and assistant police chief. The email requested the department assign two police officers to monitor the group’s float and cited “some additional threats” to the organization that came after Tuesday’s city council meeting in which there was discussion about the group’s inclusion in the annual holiday event.
“This decision was made with careful thought and consideration while balancing the rights of parade participants against the overall safety of everyone involved at the parade. The City will always respect freedoms and rights of expression. However, as in this instance, it must put the overall safety of its citizens first.”
Further, the filing stated that Prattville Pride believed “the City of Prattville and Mayor Gillespie had no legitimate concerns or credible evidence of any threats to public safety, that no criminal investigation or charges were brought against any individuals threatening the safety of anyone at the “Christmas in Prattville Christmas Parade,” and that the decision to remove Prattville Pride...
