Larry Millete ordered to stand trial for murder of still-missing wife May Millete [Breaking]
Larry Millete was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on a murder charge in the death of wife May “Maya” Millete, who vanished two years ago and remains missing. San Diego Superior Court Judge Dwayne Moring’s ruling capped a 10-day preliminary hearing for the 41-year-old defendant.
The proceedings featured testimony from about 20 witnesses — friends, family and investigators called to the stand by the prosecution. The defense did not call any witnesses.The last witness was an investigator who talked about Larry Millete’s financial and digital trail — including hundreds of online messages to people who offer spelling-casting services for a fee. Larry Millete told the spellcasters their magic was his last chance. His wife wanted to leave him, so he wanted a spell to bind her to him forever.That was September 2020, District Attorney Investigator James Rhoades testified Tuesday. Over the next four months, he said, Millete’s requests moved from wanting to control his wife to wanting her injured so she would need him, and to wanting to see her punished. After Maya Millete vanished Jan. 7, 2020, her husband bought one more spell and had a new request: “Can you remove or stop hexing my wife May.”His communications and requests spiked in the first week of January, when he spent bought 16 spells — double the amount he’d bought in all of December, Rhoades said. The day after Maya Millete disappeared, investigators say, her husband was gone for 12 hours and his cellphone did not leave a digital trail during that time, which could mean that it was off.District Attorney Investigator Mathew Grindley testified this week about information he’d gleaned from messages and data on computers and devices in the home. He said Maya Millete had a private, secret Instagram account that she used as a diary of sorts. She also used it to communicate with a man who investigators said admitted to having had an affair with her.“She wanted to leave Larry,” Grindely said. “She did not want to leave her kids. She did not want to her life that she had built. But she wanted to leave Larry.” On Monday, Chula Vista police Detective Jesse Vicente said Larry Millete declined to let forensic investigators who specialize in interviewing children sit down with his daughters and son, who were between the ages of 4 and 11 when their mother disappeared. Millete has told investigators that on Jan, 8 — the day after his wife was last seen — he took their 4-year-old son to the beach for the day, so his wife could work from home without distraction.
