It\u0027s the first step in determining whether McLaughlin, with a history of domestic violence, should be designated a dangerous or long\u002Dterm offender.

He was also convicted of stealing Mason’s two restricted handguns nearly four weeks before the assault. McLaughlin’s criminal history is solely comprised of violence against woman — mostly former domestic partners — and includes no-contact orders, threats, assaults and a kidnapping that landed him ain 2014, Crown prosecutor John Knox told a Saskatoon provincial courtroom on Monday.

He said McLaughlin’s offending demonstrates a pattern of repetitive behaviour that shows a lack of restraint and likelihood to cause harm, a pattern of persistent aggressive behaviour that shows an indifference to the foreseeable consequences, and is of a brutal nature unlikely to be managed by normal constraints — the threshold for a dangerous offender assessment.Article content McLaughlin also meets the threshold for the less serious, long-term offender criteria, where an offender must demonstrate a substantial risk of reoffending and a struggle to control themselves in the community, Knox said. He told court that two of the offences for which McLaughlin was most recently convicted are considered a “serious personal injury offence,” and one of them carries a maximum life sentence. The victim was repeatedly choked and thought she was going to die, Knox said,Knox noted that the threshold for an assessment is low — only requiring that it is “within the realm of possibility” that the offender could be designed a dangerous of long-term offender. Defence lawyer Nicholas Stooshinoff agreed that the bar is easily met because the threshold is so low.Article content Stooshinoff asked that his client, who has been out on bail, be released earlier if the assessment takes less than 60 days. Knox consented, and Mitchell made the order.
