The judge ordered the jury to continue deliberations in the case of Newark patrolman Jovanny Crespo.
when he shot two men during a high-speed chase in 2019.
Crespo is charged with fatally shooting Gregory C. Griffin, 46, and wounding Andrew J. Dixon, 35, during a late-night car chase in Newark. Prosecutors allege Crespo got out of his patrol car three times to open fire during the chase in an unjustifiable use of deadly force. Toscano tried to convince the judge that allowing Juror No. 4 to continue deliberating with the rest of the jury would be prejudicial to Crespo. But, the judge let the deliberation go forward after instructing the jury to focus exclusively on the evidence presented at trial and to remain committed to delivering an unbiased verdict.
