A federal judge has blocked a Texas law that allows police to arrest migrants suspected of entering the U.S. illegally.

FILE - Migrants wait to be processed by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol after they crossed the Rio Grande and entered the U.S. from Mexico, Oct. 19, 2023, in Eagle Pass, Texas. The arrest of a Venezuelan man who entered the U.S. illegally for the murder of a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia has triggered fiery reactions from Donald Trump and his allies.

Ezra cited the Constitution’s supremacy clause and U.S. Supreme Court decisions as factors that contributed to his ruling. He said the Texas law would conflict with federal immigration law, and the nation’s foreign relations and treaty obligations. Citing the Supreme Court’s decision on the Arizona law, Ezra wrote that the Texas law was preempted, and he struck down state officials' claims that large numbers of illegal border crossings constituted an “invasion.”

Civil rights groups, who also sued the state, have argued the law could lead to civil rights violations and racial profiling.
