A federal judge on Friday approved changes to Cleveland’s 2015 police reform agreement with the U.S. Justice Department to incorporate a new system of police accountability that voters approved last year.
Senior U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver on Friday cleared the way for Cleveland officials to begin implementing changes brought on by Issue 24, which mandates a slew of reforms to the way the city carries out police accountability.CLEVELAND, Ohio—
Oliver ended the hearing without formally approving the changes, but signaled that he was satisfied that Issue 24′s passage would “not be an impediment” to the consent decree. Cleveland Law Director Mark Griffin said at Thursday’s hearing that Mayor Justin Bibb’s administration will swiftly begin recruiting people to fill the 13-member Cleveland Police Commission.
Issue 24′s passage dramatically reshaped the commission’s role. The commission will be in charge of police discipline, will have final say on police policies and will decide what training officers will receive, among other responsibilities.
