) - As thousands prepare to gather in Selma for Jubilee weekend, city leaders say the impact goes beyond honoring history — it could also help stabilize the city’s finances. Hotels across Selma are booked, vendors are setting up downtown, and restaurants are preparing for an influx of visitors.
For Mayor Johnny Moss III, this marks his first Jubilee in office and an opportunity to highlight what he calls a rebuilding phase for the city. “This is my first Jubilee being the mayor of Selma,” Moss said. “We’re excited. This is an opportunity to showcase what we’re building in Selma.”But events of this size also generate revenue through hotel lodging taxes, sales tax from restaurants and retailers, vender permits and business licenses, alcohol permits, and event fees. “The only way you can do things to better your city is through tax revenue,” Moss said. “That’s how cities operate.” According to the mayor, that tax revenue supports city services like infrastructure, cleanup efforts, and general operations.Moss says the city will spend “thousands and thousands of dollars” on police overtime pay, public works staffing, traffic control, barricades, cleanup and sanitation. Selma’s police department is currently short-staffed, meaning additional support from surrounding agencies — including Demopolis and other nearby departments — will help cover the weekend’s security needs. “Overtime, yes,” Moss said. “But we know events like this, you’re always going to have overtime. So you budget for that and we just hope that the sales revenue, the increase in revenue we generate from this, will offset those overtime numbers.”Moss says it will take about a month after sales tax reports are finalized to determine how much revenue was generated during the weekend. “In about a month, we’ll be able to let the citizens know how much we took in for the weekend,” he said.“We just want to continue to put it in general fund, offset some of our deficiencies, and just move the city forward,” he said. While Jubilee remains one of Selma’s most historic and symbolic events, city leaders acknowledge its economic role is just as important; particularly as the city works through financial challenges.“Jubilee is the event for the entire city of Selma, the entire United States, for the world to see us,” he said. “We want people to know that Selma is rebuilding together.”Police identify man shot, killed Sunday morning in MontgomeryNew 120-foot cross rises above I-65 in Evergreen with a deeper purpose
