Juan Soto had his Mets introductory press conference on Thursday, taking questions about his free agency decision and why he didn't return to the Yankees.
The outfielder ultimately took the $765 million deal over 15 years from the Mets over the $760 million offer for 16 years from the Yankees. That’s a difference of only $3.5 million in average annual value on the surface. Escalators, perks and a gargantuan signing bonus made the Mets’ offer even more attractive.in Soto’s deal for the outfielder’s family and friends? The Yankees didn’t budge on a precedent that’s been in place for other superstars like Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter.
His explanation, in the simplest terms, was that he believed the Mets give him the best chance to win championships moving forward.“I feel like did everything that they have in their power to help me out, to bring me back, but I had four other teams doing the same thing and trying to make me feel comfortable,” Soto said. “At the end of the day, we looked at everything, we looked at the chances, we looked at what other teams wanted to do and what everybody wants to do for the next 15 years.
“The Mets is a great organization and what they have done in the past couple years, showing all the ability to keep winning, to keep growing a team, to try to grow a dynasty, is one of the most important things definitely,” Soto explained. “What you were seeing from the other side was unbelievable, and the bats and everything in the field and the future that this team has a lot to do with my decision.”“it’s been a Mets town for a long time,” Soto said. “I think we just gotta bring it to the top.
