Cressida Leyshon interviews the writer Joshua Cohen about “My Camp,” his story from the October 21, 2024, issue of The New Yorker.

New Jersey chose me: I was born there and grew up on the Jersey Shore, just past the southern terminus of the Pine Barrens, where this story is set. I own no property there, and I’ve never been in a position to go buying up houses or buying up land, so, for me, real-estate shopping comprises a fantasy far more outlandish than, say, shopping for clothes or shoes.

As for the relationship between Jews in America and Jews in Israel changing over the course of this ugly war—I don’t know. I can say they’ve become closer than ever, and that seems true, and I can say they’ve become farther apart than ever, and that seems true, too. The extremes always burn brighter and louder.
