Josh Harris, owner of NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, reportedly visited the Washington Commanders team’s training facility on Friday in Ashburn, Virginia, stirring speculation of his interest in the team.
The billionaire has ties to the Washington area, having grown up in Chevy Chase, Maryland. In addition to being the co-founder of Apollo Global Management, he is a general partner of the English Premier League's Crystal Palace Football Club and a limited partner in the Pittsburgh Steelers.Harris had unsuccessfully tried to purchase the Denver Broncos in 2022, when he was outbid by a group led by billionaire Walmart heir Rob Walton.
While the sale process conducted by Bank of America is confidential, rumors have been quickly spreading that a Commanders sale could be imminent. Fox Business reported Wednesday that a sale could occur in the coming weeks, sometime after the Super Bowl. The outlet reported that"most people in NFL circles think Jeff Bezos will bid after initial bids are in."
Commanders owner Dan Snyder has yet to confirm whether he is selling all or part of his interests in the team, but has enlisted Bank of America to explore his options. Snyder is reportedly"holding out for $7 billion" for the NFL franchise. One of the highest bids reportedly submitted was $6.3 billion during the first round of bids in December.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is believed to be another potential buyer, though Snyder is reportedly unwilling to sell to him.The billionaire businessman recently listed his sprawling Maryland estate in Potomac at $49 million. If it sells, it will be the highest price ever paid for a home in the Washington D.C. area. Snyder also owns a $48 million home in Virginia, a yacht and a home in England.
