Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove doesn’t begrudge Josh Hader protecting his left arm ahead of free agency, but understands fans’ frustrations with former closer

Houston Astros relief pitcher Josh Hader stands on the mound before pitching against the San Diego Padres during the eighth inning at Petco Park on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024 in San Diego, CA. The irony did not seem to be lost on 44,553 at Petco Park on Tuesday night when the outfield gate swung open and Josh Hader jogged out to protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning.

Musgrove added: “Typically, if you’re gonna make those decisions, you’re doing that so that you can be healthy and fresh, and you can do that at the end of the year when it matters. And when we needed him the most, he wasn’t available. So I think that upset a few guys, but it’s part of the game. Man, I’m never going to force someone to go out. I don’t know how he’s feeling or what he’s going through.

While Musgrove conceded that it’s awfully hard to begrudge a guy trying to get paid if you’ve already been paid, he was quick to draw on what he was asked to do in May 2021, well before he got his five-year, $100 million deal.
