Josh Allen surprised many by edging out two-time winner Lamar Jackson for the NFL 's Most Valuable Player award at the NFL Honors Night ceremony Thursday. The event, held in New Orleans ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl , also saw the announcement of The Associated Press' annual awards, the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
While the on-field achievements were celebrated, perhaps the biggest talker of the night was the 48-year age gap between legendary coach Bill Belichick, 72, and his girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson. Their appearance at the red carpet event sparked engagement rumors.Allen's victory came in a tight race, the closest since Matt Ryan beat Tom Brady in 2016. Allen, who led the Buffalo Bills to a fifth straight AFC East title, secured 27 first-place votes compared to Jackson's 23, finishing with 383 points. Jackson, who led the Baltimore Ravens to a second consecutive AFC North championship, garnered 26 second-place votes and one fourth, totaling 362 points. Barkley finished third with 120 points, followed by Burrow (82) and Lions quarterback Jared Goff (47). Allen threw for 3,731 yards, 28 touchdowns, and six interceptions for a 101.4 passer rating. He also rushed for 531 yards and 12 scores, making him the first player in NFL history to achieve five consecutive seasons with at least 40 total touchdowns. Jackson, meanwhile, recorded career-highs with 4,172 passing yards, 41 touchdowns to just four interceptions, and a league-leading 119.6 passer rating. He received 30 first-place votes to Allen's 18, earning AP first-team All-Pro honors. The last time a first-team All-Pro didn't win the NFL MVP award was in 1987, when John Elway was the MVP and Joe Montana was first-team All-Pro. The MVP award recognizes the player with the most valuable season, while All-Pro is a statistical distinction. Snoop Dogg, the ceremony's host, made a lighthearted jab about Belichick and Hudson's age difference, leaving Hudson visibly shocked before sharing a laugh with the audience. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award was presented to Jaguars defensive lineman Arik Armstead, recognizing his exemplary contributions both on and off the field. Kevin O'Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, was named Coach of the Year after guiding the team to 14 wins with quarterback Sam Darnold. The Vikings, largely predicted to finish last in the NFC North, ended up vying for a division title and the conference's top seed in the regular season's final game. Despite falling short, O'Connell's leadership was recognized. Antonio Gates, Jared Allen, Eric Allen, and Sterling Sharpe were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, marking the smallest induction class in 20 years.
