Born Josephine Newberger in Hyde Park, Strauss attended Hyde Park High School, her grandson said. His father, Herman Newberger, founded sweater and knitted outerwear firm Royal Knitting Mills. After high school, she attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and volunteered as a nurse’s aide during World War II. In June 1946, she married Dr. Jerome F. Strauss Jr., upon his return from the war, and the following year, the couple moved to the Gold Coast.
The program began with volunteers answering questions at an information desk just inside the museum’s Michigan Avenue entrance.
