TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Jose Rizal, the global Filipino
THE words 'going global' and 'globalization' first gained currency in the 1990s. It was driven by the impetus to look at an interconnected world after the Cold War, as well as to understand the sociopolitical and cultural forces shaping the 21st century.But there was already a global Filipino more than a hundred years ago whose life and works shaped not only his country but also the rest of the world. Dr. Jose Rizal was the first such Filipino.
He visited Professor Cesar Adib Majul, a Muslim scholar at the University of the Philippines, to know more about our national hero. When already the Malaysian deputy prime minister, he gave a rousing speech at Rizal's alma mater, the Ateneo de Manila University, extolling Rizal as 'the Asian Renaissance man.
